Attention comic book geeks! If you’re a fan of superheroes and their gadgets, this is probably our coolest infographic yet! What a superhero drives can be just as important as the costume he’s wearing, right? Every superhero without the ability to fly, superspeed or teleportation will need some mode of awesome transportation to get themselves to the scene of the crime to beat the baddies and save the day. In our latest infographic, we proudly present the transformation of seven of the most iconic super vehicles over the last 50 years.
The Dark Knight
Pow! Sock! Zok! The most famous superhero vehicle, hands down, has to be the Batmobile. DC Comic’s dark knight is Gotham City’s protector. His ride has changed a lot since the model in the 1941 comics. The first drivable Batmobile appeared in Adam West’s 1966 live-action Batman adaptation. Its design was based on the Lincoln Futura and only took 15 days to put it together. In the 70s, it went from red and black to blue and black with yellow details to highlight the bat logo. In Frank Miller’s adaptation, the Batmobile looked more like a tank emphasising its weapons until it got a much sleeker and more extravagant look in Tim Burton’s 1989 film. The 1995 version is perhaps the flashiest of them all with an almost rib-cage-style design. The machine got another makeover in ’97 with an eerie blue-black colour before it received a total revamp in the most recent Batman saga directed by Christopher Nolan. It was introduced as the Tumbler; an all-terrain, military-inspired, tank-like version of the Batmobile. It changed once again in Ben Affleck’s rendition of the masked hero in Batman vs Superman. Take Flight
The Green Goblin is the supervillain who made his way onto our screens as Spiderman’s archenemy in 1964. He is one of Marvel’s creations whose arsenal of weapons has a Halloween theme going with boomerang razor bats, ghost bombs and explosive jack-o’-lanterns. The Green Goblin doesn’t drive around New York City, he glides. When he first appeared in the Spiderman comics, he rode a flying broomstick. His ride was laughable if you compare it to the Goblin Glider in the more recent Spiderman films. In 1964, the broomstick quickly evolved into a bat-shaped hoverboard capable of great manoeuvrability and speeds up to 90 miles per hour. The glider also contains his various weapons. When Norman Osborn’s son took his father’s place as the Green Goblin, he used a different glider. In the latest movie, The Amazing Spiderman, the Goblin has the most hi-tech glider in history; it’s bird-like and sleek. You would think that the Goblin would have a green glider – well, think again! A Flying Aircraft Carrier
One of the biggest superhero vehicles has got to be the S.H.I.E.L.D Helicarrier which first appeared in Marvel comics. The fictional flying aircraft carrier was designed as a mobile headquarters for the agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and has been made famous by The Avengers series. The Helicarrier is a seaworthy ship capable of VTOL flight by way of four enormous lift fans mounted on the sides. The flying base is heavily armed and has extensive cloaking capabilities. In 1998, Jack Kirby had the daunting task of bringing the massive vehicle to the big screen in the Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D movie. The fantastic machine also makes an appearance in various Spiderman episodes and the finale of X-Men Evolution. The vehicle was completely remodelled in 2012 for The Avengers and pretty much retained its shape in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. You can compare looks in our infographic below.
