The 1980s are known for providing the world with great socio-economic change due to advances in technology and the beginning of globalisation. And while there were times of grief in the era, such as global warming becoming well known to the scientific and political community, as well as the radioactive eruption in Chernobyl, Ukraine, the Eighties are also remembered for many great things as well. Take, for example, the fall of the Berlin Wall, which occurred in 1989, or how about the Live Aid concert of 1985, which featured artists such as Mick Jagger, Tina Turner, Led Zeppelin, David Bowie and Elvis Costello. But perhaps you remember some other things from the era? Like the cars of the time, such as the Camaro. Or maybe the television shows of the 80s provide you with better memories, with arguably the best children’s cartoons of any decade being present on our screens. Whatever nostalgia you’re provided with when you think of the era, playing The Super Eighties from NetEnt is sure to bring plentiful thoughts flooding back to you, especially with the inclusive soundtrack in all its electronic glory.

The 1980s are Back!

You’ll find that this game has a layout which matches the other games in this series, those being ‘The Groovy Sixties’ and ‘The Funky Seventies’. As such, you’ll find an interface of five reels and four rows, and it’s upon this layout that you’ll be able to find the various different icons of the game. These start with the frequently seen A, J, K and Q icons, all of which have been given a very neon and 80s-age vibe to them. Accompanying these are symbols of various different items from the age, starting with the aforementioned car in red. There’s also the original mobile phone in its huge size complete with aerial and flip down bottom. A walkman stereo with earphones makes up the third symbol, while a computer video gaming joystick is another. A pair of pink stiletto shoes are the fifth standard icon, while a pair of skateboards provide the last one.

Each of these icons can be spun on to a total of 40 different pay lines, which also fall in line with the amount available in the other games of this series. However, you do have the option of altering these around simply by clicking on one of the numbers from either side of the reels, or by using the ‘Bet Lines’ button. You’ll also be able to customise the game even more, which is done by changing the amount of your wager around. The coin value is the first thing you can adjust, and this provides you with a range of between €0.01 and €0.50 per line. Meanwhile, you can also change the bet level, which provides a range of between one and five. Therefore, a maximum overall wager of €100 per round is able to be played in this game.

Retro Specialities

The special features of this game also fall very much into line with the other two games in the series, so you’ll find that the first extra addition to it is its wild icon. This is represented by the symbol which states ’80’s Wild’ on it in neon lettering. As a wild, it will stand in for all other icons on the reels in order to form a winning combination, except for the scatters. Five of these appearing on a winning, active pay line will pay out a maximum of 1,000 coins. Furthermore, multiple wild symbols on each reel will line up to create what are known as ‘Stacked Wilds’, providing you with bigger chances of forming wins.

There’s also the scatter icon, which in this game is represented by the girl with large earrings in, a pink streak through her blonde hair, and lashings of heavy make up on. You’ll need to spin at least three of these onto the reels in order to activate the special feature of it, but they do trigger this from any location. If you manage to do so, you’ll be rewarded with a total of five freespins of the reels, and all pay outs during this round are multiplied by two. If you should spin three more scatters during the freespins round, you’ll receive your total bet times two as well as an additional five freespins.

To Summarise

Overall, of the three games in this series, The Super Eighties is our favourite. It seems a little silly to say, considering that they all have the same special features and are really just carbon copies of each other with different imagery and soundtrack. However, we were born in and lived through the 80s, so it’s a little bit nostalgic for us to see the imagery within and be reminded of such times. On the whole, it’s a nice addition to this three-game series.
